Reimagining Broadway in Everett with Shared Streets

In October 2020, Neighborways Design collaborated with community partners to test new placemaking and safety improvements along Broadway in the City of Everett. As the City’s main business & transit corridor, Reimagine Broadway is utilizing proven methods to bring more business to local shops and restaurants, improve mobility for essential workers and promote physical distancing for the comfort of Everett residents of all ages.

Features of Reimagine Broadway include (shown below, clockwise from top left):

  • IMPROVED DEDICATED BUS LANE to create faster, less crowded commutes for Everett’s essential workers.

  • MOBILITY HUBS, helping residents access local businesses, jobs, child care, and grocery stores with multilingual signage, maps, real-time transit information, and BlueBikes stations.

  • PARKLETS that transform underutilized parking and asphalt space into mini urban oases – with benches and shade – for anyone, especially our seniors, to sit, socialize, and get fresh air.

  • VISUAL MARKERS at bus stops and on the sidewalk to indicate where people can stand, sit, or walk to maintain safe distances.

For its largest contribution to Reimagining Broadway, Neighborways have been developing a demonstration network of “SHARED STREETS” - featuring colorful gateways and mid-block calming treatments - which are designed to help slow down and limit car traffic, kids to play outside, and support safer walking and biking connections to Broadway.

The shared streets is a demonstration element of Reimagine Broadway and will remain installed for approximately one and a half months, allowing for an effective collection of data and feedback to inform future traffic calming in the City of Everett.
